First Quarter, 2021

Each issue of CCMR includes a breakdown of activity at all the major auctions in the U.S. for the previous quarter.  It's a lot of data, and provides you with a snapshot of where the market is at the moment.

In an extraordinary first quarter showing, the collector car market shows all indications of turning in a strong performance for the rest of 2021. Despite (or perhaps because of) cancellations, postponements, continuing CV-19 restrictions, and a general disruption to daily life, all Q1 indicators point to a strengthening market. Average sale, median sale and sell through were all up measurably. Due to far fewer vehicles running through auctions, total sales were down 21%, but measured against a whopping 42% decline in vehicles offered, even that can be viewed as a positive. As for product mix, domestics dominated. Some of this was due to the drastic scaling back of the high-end sales from Gooding, RMS, and Bonhams, which typically are top-heavy with foreign vehicles. As the auction market returns to normal, expect to see imports take a more traditional share of the market.
